Volunteer Day Plans for August 23 2013

Jun 26, 2013 | Education and Stewardship, News & Updates |

VOLUNTEER DAY PLANS for August 23, 2013
We are all set for hosting a volunteer day on August 23, 2013. This will be a special event as the NVRPA is to receive an “Outstanding Forest Steward” award from the Virginia State Forestry Department (Terry Lasher, Senior Area Forester, will present the award).
Mr. Lasher will bring a wooden plaque that has a brass plate on it that reads “NVRPA Blue Ridge Regional Park, Loudoun, June 2012.” It also has an inscription in the wood that says Outstanding Forest Steward. The thoughtful Land Stewardship You Practice Leave A Better World Than You Found To Those Who Will Follow. Mr. Lasher will also provide a metal sign that can be posted outside that says “Stewardship Forest” with a logo.
I propose that we hold our regular Volunteer Day event from 1 PM to 3 PM. Followed by a 3 PM time certain for the presentation with refreshments to follow.
Besides our regular work, we will also make the first attempt at removing “mile a minute” plants. This requires volunteers to wear gloves, and long sleeve shirts. We will provide paper bags to bag the plants so they cannot reseed.
We expect to invite the leadership of the NVRPA and members of their Board of Directors, our own Board and members, members of the Virginia Native Plant Society, interested friends, and members of the press.
